Janusz Walus Protected?

By B Sphuping

Janusz Walus, the convicted killer of South African anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani, was deported to his home country of Poland on 6 December 2024.

Hani, a prominent figure in the fight against apartheid, was the leader of the African National Congress’ military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, and the general secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP). He was brutally shot outside his home in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, in 1993.

Walus spent 28 years in prison for his heinous crime and was released on a two-year parole on 7 December 2022, which had since expired.

However, the deportation process took a sudden turn of events as a senior immigration officer received a phone call at OR Tambo International Airport, resulting in Walus being swiftly taken away- and never to be seen in South Africa again.

ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula, during a media briefing said, ” The murderer of our leader will be released from prison, if not released already.
