
On Thursday 05 June, 2025 MEC for COGTA and Human Settlements Saki Mokoena together with Head of Department Advocate T.J. Phahlo officially handed over a completed house to 77 year-old Granny Nelly Sempe in Thaba Nchu in Zone 5 after a heavy storm damaged her house in February 2025.
An overjoyed granny Sempe thanked the Department for Prioritizing her situation amongst many, for making sure she spends a warm winter in her newly rebuilt house. The granny suffered but her hope was restored after the department and MEC committed to making sure she gets help through the disaster management. The department through its intervention rebuilt the elderly’s Sempe’s house.

“This intervention by the department is part of the emergency housing programme, and the main objective of emergency housing is to provide temporary housing relief for people in urban and rural areas who find themselves in desperate circumstances, with their infrastructure being destroyed or damaged and such situations demands an immediate action to restore dignity and safety for our people to avoid threat to their lives, health and safety. In some instances, it helps residents to avoid eviction and also those who face threat of eviction under different housing challenges”, concluded MEC Mokoena.
