In a significant gathering, the Provincial Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) for the Free State, Cllr. Lawrence Mathae, welcomed attendees to the extended Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) Lekgotla. Emphasizing SALGA’s constitutional mandate, Cllr. Mathae reminded all present that the organization is dedicated to respecting, protecting, and supporting municipalities in fulfilling their developmental obligations.
“Our 2022-2027 Strategic Plan outlines our vision for a local government that is sustainable, resilient, accountable, and responsive to the needs of our communities,” Cllr. Mathae stated. He underscored the critical role of good governance, highlighting the importance of empowering councillors and municipal officials. By ensuring clear roles and implementing robust anti-corruption measures, SALGA aims to bolster the integrity of local governance, fostering an environment where public trust can flourish.
Cllr. Mathae noted that Free State municipalities are the cornerstone of the province, providing essential services that significantly impact the daily lives of citizens. He viewed SALGA as the custodian of these communities’ aspirations, bearing the responsibility of guiding them towards progress and hope.

As the Lekgotla commenced, Cllr Mathae called for deepened public participation, stressing that rebuilding trust between municipalities and the communities they serve is paramount. He urged all stakeholders to engage actively in the developmental discourse, ensuring that the voice of the community is central to decision-making processes.
In conclusion, Cllr. Mathae articulated his vision for the Lekgotla to serve as a pivotal moment—a time to celebrate achievements, learn from past challenges, and harmonize efforts towards a future in which every municipality flourishes. “Let this extended PEC Lekgotla be a turning point,” he declared, cementing a commitment to a united and progressive local governance framework in the Free State.
